Should we talk about the Super Bowl? We can’t ignore it, right? But there’s not much to say here – football cards are kind of boring and easy: it’s all about the quarterbacks. And then outside of that, you just want to hit parallels and superfractors andzzzzzzzzzz

Where was I?

Right, so here’s what I assume will happen: if the Patriots win, Drake Maye cards will go sky-high and stay there. The Brady association and Pats thing will just level him up a little. I feel like we missed the boat on Maye cards – UNLESS you want to just add to the FunC, in which case might I suggest Maye’s Halloween “Score-A-Treat” rookie, which is like $3 with shipping.

If Darnold wins, I think he has to have a big game to really max out his cards. They’re still not where they should be for someone who is playing up to his draft pick status. But winning a Super Bowl and being MVP? That should push it up; I think he needs like 330 yards and 2 TDs to really double in price and break out of the Trent Dilfer “game manager” archetype.

Darnold’s FunC card? I am a sucker for “The National VIP” cards and this one, with a piece of his hat (or “a hat that was presented to him”) from the draft, is pretty cool – and I am not a patch guy. Have we ever mentioned a patch in Mail Day?

Instead of messing with the Super Bowl guys, though,, I’m instead going to focus on the lowered prices of underrated backup QBs who can start next year — Malik Willis, Mac Jones, and Trey Lance (really). That’s where the upside is.

Before we move along, I’d like to bid a fond adieu to Parkside’s NWSL license. They’re clearing out old stock and I have a crapload of their cards already – mostly Trinity Rodman! Parkside was a fun brand with great design and really good cards. It’s a bummer they’re losing the license and I would suggest grabbing some discounted stock while the sale is on!

Speaking of smaller card brands… I am a sucker for Rittenhouse. And once in a while I’ll stay awake for an extra hour and scroll through Game of Thrones and Twilight Zone cards just to see what’s out there. I stumbled upon this Jaqueline Scott “HUGS” card and I guess it’s just how HUGS is written in all block and so robotic that keeps pulling me back to it. I wish this was about $15 because it would be gone… but $35 seems like a giant brick wall to me at the moment. Until my Mac Jones gambit pays off in September!

You know what doesn’t get enough respect? And maybe I’ll save this for a bigger place in a future newsletter? eTopps!

It was basically an NFT but you had an actual card they’d ship to you. I think when it went under I had a handful, but I search for them once in a while and the prices are way too low for what is essentially a very limited set that time has forgotten.

Did you know, for instance, that LeBron has a 2003-04 eTopps rookie? You can get it for $300.

There’s a Joe DiMaggio foil-stamped “Cleveland” and a guitar eTopps card from the 2007 National that is JUST the type of card that should be worth like $800. It sells for $30. And the “1 of 10” here is very misleading – I actually don’t know what it means, as there’s a 1 of 5 and a 1 of 25 and probably more… but it looks and sounds cool, right?

I own a few and I will likely get more… at some point someone will decide it’s worth 10x this price and I will have the market cornered!

More eTopps content coming. We haven’t even gotten into the Allen & Ginter offerings…

I’ll report back on this, but I was in GameStop this past week and I went to drop off a couple cards to ship to PSA… just to feel alive. However, there was a guy in line ahead of me haggling over a trade-in, and then a line of like six people came behind me, and so when the 10-minute transaction was over in front of me I was determined to not go through a whole PSA dropoff song and dance and ruin everyone’s day. JR FICKLE IS NOT A DAY RUINER! So I’ll go back and do it again one weekday and let everyone here know how it went. As of now, the desk guy did seem eager and knowledgeable!

Okay, enough from me! Go enjoy the Super Bowl and all the fun and joy that comes along with it!
