If you’ve spent any time lurking in the card aisle at your local Target chasing low-pop parallel sports cards, or tracking the shifting metas of the modern Trading Card Game (TCG) landscape, you know that the space is currently experiencing a massive IP gold rush. But even the most hardened collectors weren’t prepared for the sheer velocity of the latest heavyweight to enter the arena.

The official Cyberpunk Trading Card Game, in collaboration with CD PROJEKT Red, covers the lore of both the blockbuster video game and the critically acclaimed anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, just went live on Kickstarter. After briefly crashing the platform for 7 minutes, the game set a slew of new records.

The campaign blew past its initial funding goal in a staggering 8 minutes. From there, the momentum only accelerated, making the Cyberpunk TCG the fastest Kickstarter in history to hit the $5 million mark.

Elliot Cook, Co-Founder and President of WeirdCo, the studio behind the game, captured the energy of the moment:

“At WeirdCo we couldn’t be more passionate about building two things: the community that loves Cyberpunk and the human connection via the tabletop. Our Kickstarter today is the celebration of what we have been building for two years. Being the fastest Kickstarter ever to $5m is humbling and exciting at the same time. We couldn’t do any of this without our passionate community.”

With 31 days still remaining in the campaign, Cook and the team are looking ahead to a robust roadmap of stretch goals scaling all the way up to $8 million. Given the current trajectory, Cook is confident they will blow past that mark. Right now, the sky is the limit for Night City.

A 7-Tier Rarity System

As someone who watches the sports card and TCG markets religiously, the financial and mechanical structure of a new game dictates its longevity. What makes the Cyberpunk TCG particularly exciting for the hardcore collector isn’t just the IP; it’s the chase.

The game is launching with a massive 7-tiered rarity system. In the TCG space, rarity is the engine of the secondary market. A 7-tier system gives collectors the kind of granular, high-end “chase” cards that have kept modern TCG games like One Piece thriving.

Where Does Cyberpunk Fit in the TCG Ecosystem?

The TCG market is more crowded than ever, so how does a gritty, neon-drenched sci-fi game fit alongside the established titans?

Magic: The Gathering owns the complex strategy crowd. Pokémon is the undisputed king of pure collectibility and generational nostalgia. Disney Lorcana recently carved out a massive chunk of the market by offering a highly accessible, family-friendly collector’s hybrid.

Cyberpunk TCG is aiming for a fascinating, unexploited middle ground: the mature cross-media juggernaut.

By integrating both the video game and the beloved Edgerunners anime, WeirdCo is tapping directly into the explosive “anime TCG” market, a space currently dominated by One Piece. Cyberpunk brings a darker, more mature aesthetic that appeals to older gamers and collectors who might feel aged out of Pokémon or alienated by Lorcana’s overly family-friendly vibe.

While the market is flooded with weekly anime TCG drops that simply reskin existing mechanics to cash in on an IP, the Cyberpunk TCG is refreshing. It is not a reskin of an existing engine; it’s an original experience built around the specific tone and RPG roots of the Cyberpunk universe.

Whether you’re a player looking take on gigs and crush your enemies, or grade pristine, top-tier rarity foils, this is a launch you can’t ignore. Night City has officially entered the TCG space, and if this $5 million sprint is any indicator, it could be here to stay.
