Cardboard Couture: Is a Met Gala Ticket Worth More Than These Athletes’ Best Cards?

The Met Gala is the ultimate flex of wealth, status, and clout. But this year, as the red carpet rolled out and athletes rubbed shoulders with A-list celebrities, I couldn’t help but look at them and ask a very specific, hobby-brained question: Could I buy your absolute best rookie card for the price of your admission ticket?

This year a single ticket to the Met Gala costs a staggering $100,000 (up $25k from last year).

Let that sink in. One hundred grand for a single night of avant-garde fashion and bite-sized appetizers. In the sports card market, $100,000 is enough to buy the absolute holy grail for almost any athlete on the planet. But for the true hobby titans? That’s just a down payment.

So, I ran the numbers. Let’s look at 10 athletes who attended the Met Gala and see how their most expensive trading cards stack up against the price of a single ticket to the event.

The results might actually surprise you!

1. Steph Curry

  • Most Expensive Card: 2009 Panini National Treasures 1/1 Rookie Logoman Autograph

  • Record Price: $5.9 Million

  • Verdict: Card Wins (By a landslide) Let’s get the big guy out of the way first. Chef Curry’s 1/1 Logoman is one of the most expensive sports cards ever transacted. You could buy an entire table at the Met Gala, cater it, and probably fund the museum for a decade for the price of this single piece of cardboard.

2. Joe Burrow

  • Most Expensive Card: 2020 Panini National Treasures Platinum NFL Shield Patch Auto 1/1

  • Record Price: $1.7 Million (Fanatics Collect/Beckett)

  • Verdict: Card Wins Joey B doesn’t just wear designer suits; he generates designer card prices. His 2020 NT Shield RPA easily crossed the seven-figure mark in a private sale back in 2022. A $100,000 Met Gala ticket is literal pocket change compared to the peak of the Burrow market.

3. Serena Williams

  • Most Expensive Card: 2003 NetPro International Series Apparel Autograph #2A

  • Record Price: $266,400 (Goldin)

  • Verdict: Card Wins Serena is global sports royalty. In May 2022, her ultra-rare 1/100, first on the print, 2003 NetPro patch auto broke records for women’s sports cards, hammering at over a quarter of a million dollars. Anna Wintour charges a lot at the door, but she’s not charging Serena NetPro money.

4. Dwyane Wade

  • Most Expensive Card: 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Rookie Patch Auto /99

  • Record Price: ~$180,000+ (Goldin)

  • Verdict: Card Wins Wade is an absolute legend, a Hall of Famer, and part of the iconic 2003 basketball draft class. While raw or lower-graded versions go for less, highly graded gem copies of his holy grail—the 2003 Upper Deck Exquisite RPA, easily clear the $100k mark, surpassing the Gala ticket price.

5. Justin Jefferson

  • Most Expensive Card: 2020 Panini Prizm Black Finite Rookie 1/1 PSA 9

  • Record Price: $57,600 (Fanatics Collect Premier Auction)

  • Verdict: Met Gala Wins Jefferson is hands down one of the best wide receiver in the NFL. And yet, this massive 1-of-1 Black Finite PSA 9 hammered for $57,600. You could own the absolute best card of the greatest receiver of his generation, or you could stand on a staircase for three hours in New York. Choose wisely.

6. Angel Reese

  • Most Expensive Card: 2024 Panini Royalty WNBA Kaboom! Green Rookie 1/1

  • Record Price: $32,700 (Fanatics Collect Premier Auction)

  • Verdict: Met Gala Wins

    The WNBA card market is absolutely exploding right now, and Reese is one of the biggest drivers of that hype. A true 1-of-1 Green parallel of her highly coveted rookie Kaboom! insert recently hammered for $32,700 on Fanatics Collect. While that is a staggering milestone for modern women’s basketball cards and an absolute monster of a pull, Anna Wintour’s bouncers are still asking for more than triple that amount at the door.

7. Paige Bueckers

  • Most Expensive Card: 2023-24 Bowman Chrome University Sapphire Superfractor Auto 1/1

  • Record Price: $31,787 (Goldin)

  • Verdict: Met Gala Wins Paige is already a household name, and she hasn’t even played a minute of professional basketball yet! Her 1/1 Bowman University Sapphire Superfractor sold for over $31k in April 2025, a staggering number for a collegiate card. Give it a few more years in the WNBA, and we might see her outpace the Met Gala price tag, but for now, the ticket wins.

8. Jimmy Butler

  • Most Expensive Card: 2012 Panini Prizm Gold Rookie /10

  • Record Price: $28,800 (Fanatics Collect)

  • Verdict: Met Gala Wins Jimmy Buckets always shows up in the playoffs, and, apparently, the red carpet as well. His peak card market, however, is grounded in reality. His 2012 Prizm Gold, one of the most coveted modern basketball sets, sold for just under $30k at auction.

9. Russell Wilson

  • Most Expensive Card: 2012 Panini National Treasures RC Auto Patch /99 PSA 10

  • Record Price: $79,999 (Fanatics Collect)

  • Verdict: Met Gala Wins Dangeruss has a Super Bowl ring, a wildly successful career, and his 2012 NT RPA is a beautiful piece of hobby history. Finding one in a PSA 10 Gem Mint condition is a massive feat, but even a perfect copy of his premier rookie patch auto falls short of the $100,000 Gala entry fee.

10. Alysa Liu

  • Most Expensive Card: 2022 Skybox Metal Universe Champions Precious Metal Gems Purple 1/1

  • Record Price: $9,455 (Goldin)

  • Verdict: Met Gala Wins (By a lot) Figure skating is an incredible sport, and no one is more popular than Alysa right now. However the sport just doesn’t quite have the hobby infrastructure of the NBA or NFL. This Skybox Metal Universe PMG Purple is a true 1-of-1 grail for the skating phenom. But even capturing the absolute rarest, most highly sought-after insert in the entire set won’t get a ticket to the Met Gala.

The Takeaway

At the end of the day, I’m sure Anna Wintour will never extend any Gala invites based on card price but it’s a fun exercise to go through.

Next time you see an athlete flexing on the red carpet, just remember: depending on who they are, their ticket for the night might cost more than their 1-of-1 rookie card!
